Heroine Archetypes: Customizing Breaking Points

How to Use This Guide

This guide is a companion to the Workbook The Push-Pull Playbook, and this guide will help you create an authentic breaking point specifically tailored to your heroine’s archetype.

Each heroine archetype has unique resistance patterns, vulnerabilities, and triggers that make their surrender both believable and emotionally powerful.

In the The Push-Pull Playbook, section: 1.2 Identify Your Tension Points – Step 2, you would have identified your heroine’s Archetype. If you remember what she was, scroll down until you find her type. Or browse back through your workbook and find the information.

You can also download this Heroine Archetypes: Customizing Breaking Points, as a PDF to print at home.

Example Application:

For a Defiant Fighter heroine in an enemies-to-lovers mafia romance:

What she’s been denying about the antihero:

“She’s been denying that beneath his ruthless exterior, Dante’s protective instincts actually make her feel secure in a world where she’s always had to protect herself. His dominance, which she fights against constantly, provides a safety she’s never experienced before.”

Truth about herself she’s fighting:

“She’s fighting the realization that her independence has become a prison—that constantly fighting every battle alone has left her exhausted and empty. Her strength has become her weakness, and part of her craves the freedom that would come from surrendering just once to someone who could handle her burdens.”

External pressure that could push her to breaking point:

“When her solo attempt to rescue her brother goes catastrophically wrong, placing them both in danger, and Dante not only saves them but shows uncharacteristic mercy—directly contradicting her justification for hating him.”

Internal realization that would make resistance impossible:

“The recognition that fighting Dante hurts her more than surrendering to him ever could—that her defiance isn’t about protecting herself from him, but from the terrifying vulnerability of admitting she needs someone after building her entire identity around needing no one.”
